Author Topic: Identifying Older Johnson Outboard Motors Model Numbers JBCornwell posted 11:16 AM ET (US) Up to about 1970, Johnson Model numbers were two or three letters and a two digit number. Prior to 1960 the RD seriers were based on a 40.5 cu-in. After 1960 the RD series were based on a 43.9 cu-in. Though the number usually identifies the year of production of that model, it is not a calendar year code. After 1970 model numbers include the HP, as in J33ELUTa. J=Johnson 33=HP E=electric start L=long (20') shaft UT=year code (see below) a=production run [After 1980] the year code uses the letters of the word, 'INTRODUCES' to represent the digits 1-0. So the UT would be 73. Kaliber 44 3 44 chomikuj candydoll. Discover releases, reviews, credits, songs, and more about Kaliber 44 - 3:44 at Discogs. JB bsmotril posted 02:58 PM ET (US) Besides the transom clamp tag, the motor block on OMC motors has a small round metal disc on the top left part of the block with the model and serial number. You can see if the powerhead has been replaced or if it matches the number on the transom clamp. It should be useful for people who have older OMC outboard motors on their classic Boston Whaler boats. Fishrelic posted 11:59 PM ET (US) Thanks for the 'directory' JBCornwell. We have a Johnson motor with the MOD. - J25RWLCOS So far we figure it out as so: J = Johnson 25 = 25HP RW = ***don't know*** L = longshaft co = 1985 S = ***don't know*** If anyone can help us figure out what the 'RW' and 'S' means, we would really appreciate your help. [Removed question on different topic. Start new thread for a new topic--jimh.] Any information on this year and model would be greatly appreciated as we are having trouble getting any information. JBCornwell posted 07:55 AM ET (US) I think the 'R' means rope start, fishrelic. The 'S' is a production run code, useful for ordering parts that may have changed during the life of the model. Don't know about the 'W', unless the 'RW' means rewind. My 'directory' above is in error. I left out the 1970 to 1980 numbers. During that period both HP and year model are in the model number, as in: J25RL73. The 'INTRODUCES' code began in 1980.
